Dr. Amber was trained by Whapio Bartlett for her Doula Training in 2019. Since then she has taken dozens of clients through pregnancy, and postpartum. Through the years she has found a niche in postpartum doula care, as well as loss; specifically in miscarriage or abortion support.
Doula care has become popular in the last few decades in western society, but ancient and indigenous cultures had built in support for women through pregnancy, and postpartum.
The wise women of the village would come to the mother's house to clean up, help her organize and prepare for baby, and also tend to her household chores so she could rest. During birth, women were birth attendants and helped mom with any needs she had during labor and delivery. Postpartum times were met with local moms in the village coming to see mom with nutritionally dense food, helping her with her other kids, and cleaning her space. 'It takes a village' was a true understanding that women had each other.
Unfortunately, in today's western society, this concept doesn't exist. Women are unable to take more than a few months for themselves postpartum. They usually live alone, with partners who have to return back to work often right away. A doula is a necessary balm for this season of a woman's life. An extra hand to feed her so she can focus on breastfeeding. Someone to wash her dishes, do her laundry, and hold her baby when she needs to shower. A doula is a certified professional who understands the demands of a woman's body as she transitions from maiden to motherhood. She is able to support her with anything she needs.
There are certain doulas who support women through pregnancy, as well as labor and delivery. There are others who prioritize birth and postpartum. If you happen to experience a miscarriage, you do not need to do so alone, there are doulas who are more than qualified to hold your hand in those unfortunate times. Likewise, if you choose to have an abortion for any reason, there are doulas that will be more than willing to support you and your right to choose in that season. While you cope with your loss, a doula specializing in loss would support you in your grief.
As a doula, Dr. Amber has focused her attentions to birth, postpartum, and loss. If you are in need of care of this kind, please feel free to reach out and find a time to connect for a consultation appointment to see if she would be a good fit to have on your birth team.
